The Next Big Thing?
2.0 has gone all the way to mainstream & enterprise, and people keep asking about the Next Revolution. But is there such a thing as a Next Big Thing, anyway?
If there isn't: Why? And where should we look to instead?
At the reboot 9.0, one could hear a lot of people talking nostalgically about the great reboot 7.0 and about the time when 2.0 hit Europe. Everyone, it seemed, was looking for the Next Big Thing to happen and slightly disappointed for not being able to recognize it yet.
Since then, for many of us the term "web 2.0" has become a nuisance because of its buzz-wordization, and still, there is no one real contender for its succession.
In a move to free our view of technological change, I want to call into question the whole concept of a Next Big Thing and offer another account for looking for the changes that will shape our online culture.
If I'm right, it will be quite liberating to shift our focus.
