ON Wellbeing, Freedom and Justice
Fairness, opportunity and the web
When we discuss the justice of our shared public institutions the concepts of wellbeing and freedom typically play a role. I'd like to give a quick survey of the landscape of political theory on this topic, highlighting the recent work of philosopher and economist Amartya Sen (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amartya_Sen). I'll also discuss how economics as a discipline has influenced our conceptions of wellbeing and freedom in political theories of justice.
Here's two possible reasons this topic could be of interest to the Reboot10 community: 1. The question of the justice of our shared institutions is more relevant then ever in today's globalized world, and the question of freedom as opportunity is a part of the concept of justice 2. The question of justice is also relevant for analyzing the institutional structure of the web (see an old comment on Clay Shirky - Three Mistakes in the Moral Mathematics of Blogging ahtisaari.typepad.com/moia/2004/01/three_mistakes_.html)
