Dorkbot Workshop

Freeplay with Digital Artifacts

Many of you will know what a dorkbot is (if that's you, skip the next paragraph).

For those who don't: dorkbots happen all around the world. They provide a FREE, informal, friendly environment in which artists/designers/hobbyists interested in 'doing strange things with electricity', unite. Copenhagen dorkbot (dorkbotcph.dk/) meetings come in the form of talks, presentations and workshops.

For Reboot10, Dorkbot combined forces with Shiftcontrol (shiftcontrol.dk/) and Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design (ciid.dk/) to run a freestyle 3-hour workshop on Thursday, 26th June (3-6pm).

Ever wondered what it would be like to design new services, games and playful experiences in a simulated environment?

This workshop will use open-source referential markers and camera vision to create quick and dirty concepts revolving around many themes including 4G mobile services, sonic games & tag play.

Participants will be encouraged to work in groups to develop concepts and demo their solutions to others at the conference. We will use the reacTIVision system as a basic platform but will adapt it to be used in 3D real world space. Our team of interaction designers will lead the workshop and will be on hand for those needing help on the technical front.

"reacTIVision is an open-source, cross-platform computer vision framework for the fast and robust tracking of fiducial markers attached onto physical objects, as well as for multi-touch finger tracking. It was mainly designed as a toolkit for the rapid development of table-based tangible user interfaces (TUI) and multi-touch interactive surfaces. This framework was developed by Martin Kaltenbrunner and Ross Bencina at the Music Technology Group at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain"

The activities in the workshop could span from hacking existing networks/solutions to corporate strategy. The idea is for participants to choose how they would like to prototype within this environment - get as geeky, experimental and fun as you like. We want people to make or at least ‘do’ stuff. Inspirational parameters will be provided but we are open to suggestion on themes and ideas of how to to explore the possibilities this system offers.

Bring yourself, your laptop and the will to come up with new ideas. If you are CPH based and have a video camera with all needed cables and tripod please bring that too. If not the team will provide 2 test beds to try out your ideas.

This workshop is open to all and the Rebooters have offered us a room to play in. Just email Alie Rose if you're interested in signing up - a.rose at ciid.dk

Is this going to be @CIID

I.e. really far removed from Reboot but at the same time?
(If so, what a shame)

Have no fear - it's going to happen at the conference venue!

Dorkbot

Two tastes that go great together. Unless I'm presenting at the same time - I will be there.

Argh....

I so much wanted to do this... but there were so many places to be at the same time, and somehow I have yet to master the fine art of being in several places at the same time. I would appreciate some links to the reports or blog posts of those who attended.

Good Energy

Hi Dannie -

It's a shame you missed it - there was a really good energy. People really got stuck in and learned new things. It proved to be inspirational for future projects for some, and others...well they were just happy to play.

If you happen to be back in CPH at the end of August we may well be running the same workshop: dorkbotcph.dk/

I didn't get the contact details of all the attendees but I'll do my best to put the bloggers amonst them in touch with you.

If not before, see you at next years reboot!
