public transit tips
It's easy to get around Copenhagen -- and, indeed, all of Denmark -- by public transit: there's an integrated network of buses, Metro, regional trains (S-trains) and inter-city trains. Here are some tips to help you get acclimated quickly.
Use the Journey Planner
The Journey Planner is your friend: you can use it to get door-to-door directions for travel on public transit.
To get yourself to reboot itself, just enter your starting point, and then Nyelandsvej 75A, 2000 Frederiksberg, Frederiksberg as the destination.
There's also a mobile version of the journey planner.
One Ticket Serves All
You can use one ticket for travel on the bus, Metro and S-train: just count the number of "zones" you're going to travel through -- you'll find maps pasted on the ticket machines -- and buy a ticket for the total number of zones you'll be visiting.
For example, a ticket from the Copenhagen Airport to the downtown Central Station on S-train requires a 3-zone ticket. Once you get off the train, you can continue your journey on the bus or Metro with the same ticket.
A two-zone ticket is good for a journey of an hour or less.
Carry Coins
It is very helpful to have some coins in your pocket if you want to make your way around by public transit -- 10 and 20 DKK coins are most helpful. In my experience, the S-train and Metro ticket dispensers refuse to take non-Danish credit cards, or at least PIN-less credit cards, and they don't take paper bills.
Buy a Klippekort
You can buy a 10-journey two- or three-zone "klippekort" from stores like 7 Eleven. This gives you a substantial discount over buying ten individual tickets, and is an excellent option if you'll be using transit a lot.
True to its name, you "clip" the klippekort when you board -- either at the entrance to the bus, or on the Metro or train platform. Just stick the card in "feet first" and a notch will be taken out of it.
Take Your Bike
You can take your bike on the Metro, but only some of the time:
"Bikes are welcome in the Metro. You just need to buy a bike-ticket or punch on a bike ten-trip card. In rush-hour between 7 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. and again between 3.30 p.m. and 5 p.m. bikes are not allowed. If you are travelling with a bike in rush-hour you will be fined and further travel is not allowed."
You can take your bicycle on the S-train at all hours:
"You can carry your bike in the S-trains at all times. But you can not stand by or on the S-train with the bike in Nørreport station on weekdays (Monday-Friday) in the period between the hours. 7.00 and 8.30 or 15.30 og 17.00."
