Talk

Digital Activism

The overall theme of this talk is the growing impact of digital networked technologies in countries with a limited public sphere with a focus on Iran.

Both citizens and organizations are using other digital networked technologies to engage in civic life, and at the same time contributing to the media diversity on both a local and a global level. Digital networked technologies and especially blogs play a special part in countries like Iran with a limited public sphere, where a series of restrictions apply to public debate and the media. This may include the authorities’ ambivalence of globalization versus control, propaganda versus censorship and seeking ideological backing versus trying to out-manoeuvre the opposition.
