structure vs freedom

an exploration of the dynamic relationship between freedom and structure

Structure vs Freedom: An exploration of the dynamic relationship between freedom and structure in the fields of architecture and engineering. How do structures create freedom, and when is freedom constrained by the deliberate imposition of structure? When does architecture reinforce its own cultural bias instead of supporting the community interactions at play?

Can we look to examples in which public space cannot be controlled and resists our attempts to control? And what about the politics of space and the politics of structure? How are spaces and lives made subject to authority through the use of political structures and symbols which are restrictive and deny the possibility of personal and multiple interpretations.

This presentation will take audience members through a journey of definitions and space.

journeys through the concrete and into the abstract near past

We'll definitely have similar ideas in our talks, but I'm presenting examples out of architectural history/theory -- Cedric Price in the 1970s and Eyal Weizman's more contemporary work on Israeli army soldiers. Very much looking forward to hearing your talk.

journeys through concrete

i think yours will probably dig much deeper into the theory and history of architecture, i am more of a pop culture geek and will swing between the social and built environment. look forward to meeting and hearing your talk as well!

spaces with no place

looking forward to it! I was spending some brain cycles recently on the role of interstitial spaces, I think this could overlap somehow.
Interstitial can be virtual, but it hasn't to be. And the other way around is valid as well.
The mandatory Gibson quote (in a post about SecondLife and Sony Home):
"Chia and her buds build their treehouses in corporate ghost sites. That's the difference. Interstitial. Gotta be interstitial.
Call me when you get it worked out. I'll be on eBay."
And an example of interstitial living space: www.make-digital.com/make/vol14/?pg=36&u1=texterity&cookies=1
