The True cost of Free

A conversation on how to support adoption of free technology and use of free content in non-geek ecosystems

We live in a world where there are a lot of free tools and free content out there. Hardware is becoming more and more accessible. New web services pop up every day, shaping our needs and adding new dimensions to our lives.
But what about technology adoption? How long and winding is the road to adoption and day to day usage of free tools and content for people and organisations who are not necessarily enthused about technology in itself? Adoption is closely related to a change in mental frameworks, which is not an easy process.
How can this process be facilitated?

I would like to invite you to a conversation (outdoors, if weather permits!) on your good (and bad) experiences in spreading the word about new technologies and encouraging friends, colleagues and customers to adopt them.
What's in your evangelizer's bag? What do you tell them? What do you show them? Where do you start? What are the main counter-arguments you hear?

There are definitely some costs for letting all these social applications into our lives. Most of them are free, but we pay with our time, flow of attention and by allowing them to transform us. Technologies re-shape our lives while we are shaping them. The benefits are obvious for us reboot attendees. And of course, there are dangers.

How can we help other people to get involved in the digital world? Should we?

I have a couple of both success and war stories to share myself, but I would welcome any input pointing to stories that could trigger the conversation.

And I would be happy to receive your suggestions for questions to be asked during this conversation. Thank you!

Last year, Ton Zijlstra and Elmine Wijnia facilitated a conversation on "Owning your learning path". I wish we could recreate that kind of sharing environment!

" ...but we pay with our time, flow of attention and by allowing them to transform us"

This is what i ponder almost daily bases - how to get people interested and engaged, what is the currency when trading for people's time and focus.
