Grant awarded: €1,000

cphbikerental.mono.net

A bike rental business in Copenhagen. There's lots of those of course. What's different about Baisikeli is that they use their income to deliver second hand bikes to African villages where they are converted to ambulance bicycles, bicycles with containers to gather water, and bicycles for children to attend school. The bikes generate work, education along with cheaper and better transportation.

Actions:

Guy spoke with Henrik who co-runs Baisikeli - he estimated that the €1,000 Reboot grant will directly fund the shipment of 82 bikes to Africa (they currently have workshops in Sudan, Tanzania and another country I can't remember!)

If you're up for helping convert an Excel based booking/inventory management system to a web based one, get in tocuh with the guys via their website.

They also send volunteers to help train up on bike repair and building, and help establish the local operations (it's a 6 month assignment - get in touch via the website if you're interested).

And if you're in CPH - rent your bike from them; profits go to sending more bikes.

Updates:

26 June 2009 - Guy spoke with Henrik to find out more info and get contact details.
