PreBoot Event Weds 24th 13h-17h | reboot11
Future of reading unconference
PreBoot Event (Wednesday 24th, 13.00->17.00 at Kettle Hall (main Reboot venue)
This is confirmed - we've got the use of the 'Box Room' in the Kettle Hall.
*we'll stop at 17.00h well in time to get to the Boat trip in the Harbour!*
*And pop along anytime between 13.00h -> 17.00h - conversations will be restarting every 45mins or so...*
Hopefully, a lot of us will be in Copenhagen on Wednesday...lets talk about reading (and writing) in the 21st century...
Readers/ Authors/ Bloggers/ Publishers/ Journalists/ Tweeters/ Geeks/ REBOOTERS!!!:
Who fancies taking part in a Wednesday afternoon 'unconference' to talk about the pleasures (and challenges) of reading, text-as-bits, the beauty (and function) of paper, authorship, publishing, printing, the cultural (and business) opportunities of digital (and paper) books, the way devices enhance/hinder the reading experience, social reading?
Who's in?
Please suggest discussion topics - we'll need discussion leaders who can introduce a topic and then lead the conversation amongst participants...

paperCamp
A few months ago in London they had a bookCamp and along with it, there was a paperCamp. bookcamp.pbworks.com/PaperCamp
We could replicate it in our own style. I'm happy to contribute about the paperNet, pocketMods, paperWikis and social travel guides.
re. PaperCamp
Hullo Brian,
re. PaperCamp - nice idea; I followed that from afar - it looked like a lovely set of concepts and talks; I'd love to talk about those topics as well.
Don´t get in till around 8 pm
Any chance you guys will still be around then?
Session time - 1pm->5pm Weds 24 June, Kettle Hall (main Reboot venue)
@ Nadia - I think we'll be well into the boat-trip by 8pm (from Thomas's email: " pre-reboot will be 18.30 wednesday departing from Nyhavn (same place as the last years harbour cruise").
I'm hoping to (audio) record the session, though; and we could of course continue the discussions on Thur or Fri...
For those guys who will be in CPH on Wednesday, I'm thinking we could have a few hrs at it - 4hrs gives us time to explore some good ideas, welcome in people as they arrive, and then we still have time to cycle/taxi to Nyhavn for the PreBoot party?
Discussion Topic Ideas?
It would be good if we can nail down a few areas we'd like to discuss next Weds.
We're dealing with a huge area, so it's probably best if we decide on a bunch of discussion topics, so we can all have a think in advance.
So, let's have your suggestions for topics! I've got my own biases (pamphlets as the perfect 'ebook' format, social connections through reading) - what would you like to talk about?
If you're looking for inspiration, a fantastic list of ideas was covered in 'BookCamp' earlier this year- here's a list: bookcamp.pbworks.com/
And Brian's link to PaperCamp above also has some lovely projects and concepts: bookcamp.pbworks.com/PaperCamp
Add your topic ideas in the comments...
Notes on the unconference format...
So, we've got a good few of us interested, hopefully we can get 20+ of us together next Wednesday?
I think we should stick as tightly as we can to the unconference format (see below). There won't be any 'presenters', but one or two of us need to act as 'discussion leaders'.
And we're *all* contributors, so have a think about the topic areas on your way over - jot down any examples, ideas, questions you want to introduce.
Notes on the unconference format:
1) What is an unconference?
- Dave Winer, who conceived of the unconference concept, wrote a great 'manifesto' on the idea: scripting.wordpress.com/2006/03/05/what-is-an-unconference/
2) Getting involved an unconference
Here's a useful 'participant's guide': www.bloggercon.org/II/newbies
Some inspiration
@nadia: I know that I'll be on the boat-trip, it's a classic, you really can't afford to miss.
Future of reading? I noticed that Picard reads print-books, or are they pimped computers or replicators?
Basically it's inevitable that the distinction between print
and digital will disappear, so we should brace ourself.
This weekend there was heated discussion about this on Danish DR2, where a publisher was blasting the competion with "that what they're doing isn't "art" and are just producing insane amounts of softporn/noise..." He was a very angry old man (trying to avoid a word starting with f here). I'll try to locate the clip and have it subtitled - in some way.
His blasting is, somewhat, reminisent to Keen's concept of the amateur.
Great topic
Guy, great topic for discussion. It's something we've been dabbling with for a few years at Issuu.com. Unfortunately I can't make it tomorrow, but let's talk at the conference.
Schedule, and what shall we talk about?
Topics and Scheduling...
What shall we talk about?
Please have a think about something you' like to share - maybe a device, a story, an idea, a book, an observation, a wish, a project. Anything that can trigger or contribute to a group conversation.
We still need conversation leaders - someone who can introduce a topic, and then bring in (and shut up!) people to bounce the conversation along and make sure everyone gets a chance to contribute.
Proposed Schedule:
13h->13.30h - Organising, hellos, coffee(?)
13.30 - 14.15 Conversation One
14.15-15.00 Conversation Two
15.00-15.15 Break
15.15 - 16.00 Conversation Three
16.00 - 17.00 Conversation Four
17.00 - Cabs/Bikes/Walks to harbour, to go to preBoot party...
Backup Topics
I gave a short talk on this topic earlier this year ...you might get some ideas, looking at my notes?
www.thinkfold.com/pub/future-of-reading-ignite-talk-22-Jan-2009
I've got pet interests, but I don't want to 'push' y ideas at all...however, if no-one comes up with any suggestions, rather than leave the day completely to chance, here's my 'backup' list of conversation starters...

Friday?
I missed this pre-event, but is now at reboot - so, are there anything on these topics during the Friday?
Or any documentation of what you talked about during the pre-event?
More 'un' than conference :-)
Nice conversations with a small group in the Sun. We abandoned plans for structured conversations/recordings, I'm afraid...sun, beer and gadgets overtook!
I think the breadth of the subject area requires, maybe, a dedicated day...now there's an idea....

Creating a (paper) book of the discussions
We'll make ourselves publishers - I'll make sure I record all the conversations that we have, get them transcribed by Amazon Mech Turk, and upload it as a Lulu/whatever book, as a record of the event. So there :-p
