Ethnography as a design tool

I'd be interested to discuss my experience of using ethnographic research as a tool in the design process with others who are either designing stuff or those how have used ethnographic practices. Where does it fit? Where does the design of the research fit in the process? How can you do it cost effectively? And how should you brief in the outputs?
