the same story a 10.000 times

Why are the big stories written 10.000 times based on the same telegram from ritzau?

If you look at Google news, the same story is written over and over, and often 10.000 times by different publishers, all in English. Imagine the total of these 10x100 post of these stories in all languages? Possibly 100.000+ times the same old news. The next day they are then again posted in the news paper. And the circle goes on and on until it dies, a million times. Not very webbish...

I would like to propose a talk on how to get to terms with the same stories published over and over. Solutions a endless, but business models aren't. How can we make publishers use the web as it was designed to be, and even cut down on the amount of data being published? I have seen figures that say data creation is at an all time high, and 80% of this is lost within a year. Could we solve this by making sure everything is only published once?

This is not only a issue on the web, its also a big issue in print. Most free papers are just rundowns of what Ritzau or Reuters send out. And they don't even bother fixing the spelling.

Even the blogosphere is not really helped this over publishing, the way bloggers all link to the video and writing what the source says, instead of linking to the source - and let him tell the story. Somehow bloggers as open minded people, should be able to agree on a technical and acceptable solution, and show the publishers what they done wrong.
